Alpha-tocopherol does not affect the degradation of other vitamin E

A new study of rats shows that alpha-tocopherol does not promote the degradation of other vitamin E configurations.


Previously, people were concerned that alpha-tocopherol might lead to the degradation of other configurations of vitamin E, which may be related to omega hydroxylation.This view frustrates some food supplement formulators, since each of the various configurations of vitamin E exists in nature.And a new Japanese study of mice suggests that alpha-tocopherol and other configurations of vitamin E are not biodegradable.

During the six-week animal study, the researchers put mice into two groups, one group was fed a diet that did not include alpha-tocopherol, another group was fed a diet of alpha-tocopherol for a week.The researchers then fed the mice a diet rich in gamma tocopherol.The results showed that the presence of alpha-tocopherol did not affect the rats' access to gamma tocopherol from their diet.The plasma, liver, adrenal, small intestine and cardiac tissues of the two groups of mice were similar to the content of gamma tocopherol, and the metabolites of gamma tocopherol were detected in the urine.


Later, the researchers conducted a second study, rats were divided into two groups, one group was fed a diet that did not include alpha-tocopherol, another group was fed a diet of alpha-tocopherol for a week.The rats were then fed a diet rich in tocotrienols for six weeks.To analyze the same site, the researchers found that alpha-tocophenol had no effect on the absorption and utilization of trienol.
